Customs with a real map ban, series that decide the rating, and a queue that knows what to do with a five-stack.
Siege already hands every player a rank, and it is almost useless for running a community. It describes how you did against strangers in a matchmaking pool you have no relationship with, at whatever hour the queue happened to fill. What a custom-games community needs is the opposite: the same forty people, a map nobody had to argue about, and a result that is still there next Thursday.
The administrative load is what kills those communities, not the lack of players. Someone pings a role, waits twenty minutes, reads out teams, and then the result exists only in the memory of whoever was in the lobby. It works for a month.
Siege also has one structural quirk that matters more here than in any other tactical shooter: the community is built out of stacks. People who play Siege play it with the same four friends, and a pre-made walking into a balanced draw either wrecks the balance or gets split up and resents it. That is a queue setting rather than a social problem, and it is worth deciding before the first night rather than after it.
The last thing to internalise is that a Siege match is already a long, two-sided event — both halves, first to seven. That makes it a far better unit of evidence than a round, and a better one than a single game in most other titles. The rating wants the match, or the series of them.
The decisions that are specific to Rainbow Six Siege. Everything else follows the general setup guide.
Use Player (Specific Format) at 5v5 for a customs queue where teams re-form every night — the teams are temporary, so there is nothing durable for a team rating to attach to. If your community is actually a set of named five-man rosters that scrim each other, invert it: create the rosters with /team_admin create, rate them with Team Alias (Specific Format), and queue them with /queue_team.
Build a pool from the maps you actually play and set Map Voting Strategy to Captains Ban (no reroll). Siege pools are small — a competitive rotation is around seven maps — so alternating bans converge on one map quickly and cleanly. Reach for Captains Ban (with reroll) only if you find the same two maps surviving every veto, which happens when the pool is smaller than about five.
This is the Siege-specific decision. Party Queue adds a "Join as Party" button that guarantees a pre-made stays on the same team — which is what your five-stacks want and the exact opposite of what balancing wants. Leaving it off produces fairer games and some grumbling; turning it on produces stack-vs-stack nights that are genuinely more fun and a ladder that mostly measures which stack you are in. Pick deliberately, and consider running one queue of each.
If your group plays two or three maps in a sitting, set the queue's Match Format to Best Of N so one rating change comes out of the block rather than one per map. Leaving it on Single Match is right for a drop-in customs night where people leave after one map — the honest test is whether your players would describe the evening as "a scrim" or as "some games".
Operator bans, overtime rules and server settings happen inside your custom lobby — the bot runs the queue, the teams, the veto and the ratings, and deliberately does not model the ban phase. Write the ruleset into the queue description so it is on screen at the moment someone is deciding whether to press join, rather than in a pinned message from four months ago.

Set up automated matchmaking for Valorant customs (or any competitive game) in your Discord server. Players join a queue, the bot balances teams by Elo, and the match starts. No coordination needed.

Team Up is free to start. Add the bot, create a leaderboard, and record your first match — the ladder builds itself from there.
